Remember when Facebook ruled the social media world? Just ask your teenager how relative Facebook in their world, and you quickly get the impression that it is passé. Apparently, if you don’t have to pay for it, it becomes less valuable.
Sycamore is a community that values and actively supports the arts – from the visual arts to rock, choral and symphonic music, to live theater, dance, and even aerial arts.
Founded in 1976, the nonprofit community orchestra consists of approximately 70 talented professional, dedicated amateur, and student musicians, according to Amanda Nelson, general manager for the orchestra.
The KSO performs seven concerts each year, including a free concert each summer at Hopkins Park, a free Halloween concert at NIU’s Boutell Memorial Concert Hall (where their regular season concerts are held), and an annual concert just for school kids and families at the historical Egyptian Theatre.
The KSO’s music director and conductor, Linc Smelser, plans concerts that teach, entertain and thrill concertgoers year after year, making live orchestral music accessible to the community. Kishwaukee Valley Art League Founded in 1972, the Kishwaukee Valley Art League (KVAL) is a non-profit organization dedicated to encouraging the practice and appreciation of the arts and providing art education opportunities for the residents of Sycamore and surrounding communities.
Members meet monthly in the Hy Vee Food Store community room, 2700 De Kalb Ave., Sycamore, to see art demonstrations and share their own artistic creations.
In addition to the monthly meetings, the 62 adult and family members have the opportunity to participate in group work sessions and plein air sessions at picturesque area locations and to exhibit their artwork at various venues and shows throughout the year, explained Tamara Shriver, program director.
